Funding: EU - FAIR3 (CT96-1920) "COGANOG"

From 01/1997 to 12/1999

Principal Investigator: Gerhard Gebauer
Staff: Jutta Lauf, Nicole Wrage, Jens Tilsner

The overall objectives of the project Controlling Gaseous Nitrogen Oxide emissions from Grassland Farming Systems (COGANOG) are: (i) quantifying nitrous oxide (N2O) and nitrogen oxide plus nitrogen dioxide (NOx = NO + NO2) emissions from grassland farming systems in Europe, (ii) increasing the understanding of their controls, (iii) providing sustainable management options to reduce these emissions. The controbution of the Bayreuth subproject is focussed on the determination of the stable isotope (15N/14N and 18O/16O) compositions of N2O emitted from the soils and of NH4+ and NO3- in the soil for a wide range of conditions, using advanced analytical techniques. This will yield information about the relative contribution of the microbial processes of nitrification and denitrification to the total N2O emissions from grasslands and information on their controls. Specific objectives are: (i) Testing the applicability of stable isotope measurements as a tool for discrimination between nitrification and denitrification as sources of N2O for a range of grassland management types. (ii) Quantification of seasonal and total annual budgets of N2O and NOx emissions and of NH4+ and NO3- in the soil for unfertilized and fertilized grassland at a site in Germany.
